Maria Delgado discusses Catalan performance and film in the 21st century at the Graduate Center - CUNY

In 2018 at the age of 83 Núria Espert performed in Romancero gitano – it is a piece she has continued to tour even during Covid. Maria Delgado will give a brief overview of the 65+- year career, from her role as a powerful agent for change during the difficult years of the Franco regime to her cultural importance in democratic period as an actress, director, producer and cultural commentator.

Núria Espert's multiple roles – and indeed multiple theatricalities – have offered potent signifiers both for a mode of engagement with the shifting socio-political landscape and for a wider understanding of how cultural capital operates across the nascent democracy of this region. Maria Delgado's lecture will end with a brief consideration of Espert's performances in King Lear (in 2015) and Romancero gitano, considering the ways Delgado maps her development as a researcher as a journey spent watching Núria Espert in the theatre since 1983.

Maria M. Delgado is Professor and Director of Research at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London and Honorary Fellow at the Institute of Modern Languages Research at the University of London.

As the Mercè Rodoreda Chair visiting professor this Spring semester 2021, Prof. Delgado will also coordinate a course for Graduate Center students focused on Catalan performance and film in the twenty-first century.

At a time of severe challenges for the creative arts in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak, this week of seminars will offer a unique window into Catalan culture at a time of crisis. Rather than a series of seminars given by an academic, this year’s chair, Maria Delgado curates a week of conversations with leading artists in Catalonia. It is a way of capturing the temper of the times from those making work in the present climate but also a mode of exploring the particular dynamics that have made Catalonia such remarkable centre for film- and theatre-making since the death of Franco.

The Mercè Rodoreda Chair in Catalan Studies is part of the Ph.D. Program in Latin American, Iberian, and Latino Cultures at the Graduate Center - CUNY. Created in 2003 and funded by Institut Ramon Llull, each semester the Mercè Rodoreda Chair offers a course in Catalan literature and culture, and a course in Catalan sociolinguistics, alternatively.
