The University College Cork will host a round-table with emerging poets in Catalan, Basque, and Galician

Language.  CORK, 09/04/2021

On the 13th of April, Catalan, Basque and Galician literature will be present at the University College Cork through the voices of three outstanding poets: Àngels Moreno (Valencia), Beatriz Chivite (Navarra) and Alba Cid (Galicia).

They are young women writing in minoritised languages and their names have not gone unnoticed in national and international literary scenes as their poems have already been translated into English, Portuguese, Romanian, Greek and Spanish. The three poets have parallel remarkable careers, they started writing and seeing their works published at a very early age and have not stopped since, what led them to achieve a noteworthy recognition, regardless of the challenges of producing poetry in traditionally masculinised environments and writing in non-hegemonic languages.

These are just some of the questions they will discuss as the unifying threads of a virtual round-table under the title Rising female voices in Spanish peripheral poetry: challenges and goals, primarily aimed at undergraduate students of Catalan, Basque and Galician from Ireland and the UK. The poets will exchange views on the difficulties they have to face as writers, explain their current and future projects and recite a selection of poems live. Finally, there will be a questions and answers brief part for our students to have the chance to interview the writers. The activity will mostly be conducted in English, with the exception of the poems that will be read in Catalan, Basque and Galician.

This event is the result of a cooperative project by the Catalan, Basque and Galician language assistantships from the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at UCC with the collaboration of Institut Ramon Llull, Etxepare Euskal Institutua, Xunta de Galicia and the Irish Centre for Galician Studies (UCC). With the goal of bringing us closer to the poetry creation process in minoritized languages from a gender perspective and foster the visibility of young women authors, it will also be accessible for the UCC community and the general public, as the round-table will be recorded to be screened on the 23rd of April, coinciding with the Catalan festivity of Sant Jordi, as part of the Cork World Book Fest’s programme, the city festival celebrating international literature that will be held virtually, once more.

As every year, Catalan and Irish culture will meet in this festive celebration to reinforce their commitment for literature and minoritised languages as part of our most valuable cultural heritage.
