The American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) teams up with The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre for the second year for a play in translation at the upcoming ALTA conference. The winner of the Play in Translation Contest, which will be staged on November 12, is BEFORE THE GERMAN’S HERE by Catalan playwright Marta Barceló, translated from Catalan by Hillary J. Gardner

Since their inception, The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre has been thrilled to present new works of translation and adaptation with such beloved works as The Little Prince, Blood Wedding, and The Crack: Among Wild Animals. This season we are excited to present to our audiences the winner of our second contest hosted in collaboration with the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA). This year’s competition winner, Before the German’s Here, has been selected from a diverse field of plays translated into English that that explore the theme of ‘In Between’ .

Juliá has just been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Suddenly her life has been thrown into a blaring state of imminence. She knows now, her biggest enemy is time. Juliá faces her family, her past, and herself, as she races the ever ticking clock to live her life to the fullest, before her own mind betrays her. A vitalist play that transmits a glimmer of hope in the face of irreversibility and that speaks to us about choice, identity, and courage.
